After years of primarily relying on high school talent to build its roster, the Duke Basketball program has embraced the transfer portal this offseason like never before. This year, Duke added four transfers, equaling the number of transfers welcomed over the past two years combined.

Will Virginia go after Culpeper's Maliq Brown a second time?Duke’s transfer acquisitions are now considered the best in the ACC and among the best nationwide. According to 247Sports and CBSSportsCBB, three of Duke’s transfers rank among the top ten in the ACC.

Ranking of Duke’s Transfer Additions in the ACC:
Sion James: The former Tulane standout, who averaged 14.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in 2023-24, is Duke’s highest-rated transfer. He is ranked as the No. 4 transfer in the ACC and the No. 65 transfer nationally, as well as the No. 11 shooting guard in the country according to 247Sports.

Maliq Brown: A 6-foot-8 forward from Syracuse, Brown averaged 9.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game last season. He is rated the No. 5 transfer in the ACC and the No. 70 transfer overall, as well as the No. 9 power forward nationally. Although he has started 25 games in his career, he will likely come off the bench for Duke next season, providing valuable veteran depth.

Mason Gillis: The 6-foot-6 super-senior from Purdue has appeared in 132 games. He is rated the No. 10 transfer in the ACC, No. 95 transfer overall, and No. 20 small forward nationally. Despite averaging 6.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game last season, his experience and leadership are expected to be significant assets for Duke.

Duke is the only ACC program with multiple players in the top ten transfer additions. North Carolina’s Cade Tyson (a transfer from Belmont) tops the list, with other top ten transfers joining programs such as Georgia Tech, NC State, Louisville, Virginia, Miami, and Wake Forest.

Duke boasts the No. 19 overall transfer class in the country, making it the best in the ACC. Combined with a historic high school recruiting class, this impressive group of transfers positions Duke as a strong contender for the National Championship next season.
