According to insights from Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, efforts to address Hill’s contract commenced post the 2023 season, gaining momentum especially after A.J. Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles secured a groundbreaking deal. Brown’s three-year, $96 million contract extension, featuring an $84 million guarantee, now stands as the largest ever for an NFL receiver, surpassing Hill’s previous $30 million annual average with its $32 million mark.

Hill, currently in the second year of his four-year, $120 million extension inked during Miami’s blockbuster trade with the Kansas City Chiefs, finds his deal less favorable upon closer examination. Florio notes a significant gap between his scheduled earnings for the upcoming season ($19.6 million) and the whopping $45 million slated for the final year in 2026, labeling it “ridiculously unrealistic.” Excluding this outlier, Hill’s actual average earnings tally around $25 million annually.

Despite expressing his desire to stay with Miami long-term earlier this month, Hill’s plea for a new deal reflects his aspirations. However, with three years remaining on his current contract, his future with the Dolphins depends solely on their willingness to renegotiate.

The offseason has witnessed a flurry of lucrative extensions for receivers like Amon-Ra St. Brown of the Detroit Lions and Nico Collins of the Houston Texans. Even Hill’s teammate Jaylen Waddle secured a notable three-year, $84.75 million extension, elevating him among the NFL’s top-paid receivers.

With a standout 2023 season under his belt, leading the league with 1,799 receiving yards, Hill’s desire for commensurate compensation is justified. The Dolphins would do well to accommodate the eight-time Pro Bowler, potentially averting future contract disputes.
